The telly folk might have been happy not to share their awards night with the New Zealand film industry this year, but thanks to organisers Hugh Sundae (nzherald.co.nz) and Ant Timpson (of 48 Film Festival fame) this country’s talented filmmakers and thespians will still be acknowledged in 2012.

I’ve been waiting for filmmaker Lars von Trier to feature in our Director’s Showcase ever since the series began over a year ago. So I’m rather excited it’s his turn this month, and we can indulge in five films that have made von Trier a controversial and unique cinematic force.

This week, Rialto Channel is playing one of the most stunning films I’ve seen this year, although officially released late last year, Lars Von Trier’s psychological disaster movie Melancholia (Saturday 3rd November, 8.30pm).

Acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick could never be accused of being prolific. His 2011 Palme d’Or winning and Oscar nominated film The Tree of Life, screening this Saturday 27th October at 8.30pm, is only his fifth film since Badlands, his remarkable debut in 1973. For this reason alone, a Malick film is not to be missed.
