The telly folk might have been happy not to share their awards night with the New Zealand film industry this year, but thanks to organisers Hugh Sundae (NZ Herald Online Entertainment Editor) and Ant Timpson (of 48 Film Festival fame) this country’s talented filmmakers and thespians will still be acknowledged in 2012.

Officially co-presented by Rialto Channel and NZ Herald Online, the Sorta Unofficial New Zealand Film Awards are on December 4th at The Civic Wintergarden, and Rialto Channel is proud to be broadcasting the awards on Sunday 16th December at 6.25pm.

If you look at the nominees for the SUNZFA, which were announced on Sunday evening, it’s clear that the diverse collection of NZ films released over the last year deserve to be celebrated. Frankly, the judges have an almost impossible job on their hands. Every nomination is justified, and it seems that the trickiest categories to judge will be the quality nominations in the documentary and short film sections.

When it comes to the feature films, The Orator and Two Little Boys have the best chance of landing an inaugural Moa award, with 11 nominations each. Although, How to Meet Girls from A Distance, The Most Fun You Can Have Dying, Good For Nothing and Sione’s Wedding also feature heavily. I’m putting my money on The Orator to scoop the Rialto Channel Best Film award.

If you’re wondering why the awards are called “Sorta, Unofficial”, it’s because the organisers couldn’t afford a lawyer to work out whether they could call them the official awards…well, it makes for a good story right?

Here’s is a list of the main nominees, congratulations to all:
