This weeks sees Rialto run the full gamut of emotions, as you’d expect, beginning with the 2011 Oscar nominee Incendies (Tuesday 19th June, 8.30pm), a film from Quebec director Denis Villeneuve based on the play Scorched by Wajdi Mouawad. It’s the heart-wrenching story of 20-something Canadian twins Simon (Maxim Gau) and Jeanne (Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin) who discover when reading their mother’s will that their father is alive (they had been told he was dead) and they have a brother they didn’t know about.

Give Up Tomorrow is the debut documentary from American filmmaker Michael Collins. It tells the story of 19 year old student Paco Larranaga who with several other young men was arrested for the rape and murder of two sisters in the Philippines in 1997. Despite strong evidence of Paco’s innocence he was convicted, imprisoned and sentenced to death by a questionable judicial system. In this brilliantly executed documentary, Collins takes us chronologically through the extraordinary story of this “trial of the century”.

Michael Collins has spent the last 13 months traveling the world with his award winning film, and kindly took the time to answer a few questions for us.

As the southerly blast brings parts of the country to a brief standstill, we can at least console ourselves with the thought it could be worse - we could be at a polar station on a desolate island in the Arctic Ocean.

Kicking off Rialto Channel’s month of Crime Documentaries on Thursday evenings at 8.30pm, is the remarkable tale of a modern day gangster, Manchester’s Dominic Noonan. Directed by investigative reporter Donal MacIntyre who is well known for his hard hitting investigations and undercover exposes, A Very British Gangster is a film that confirms your perception of a modern day gangster, and then tears down those perceptions with some unexpected twists.

Since 1988, the city of Philadelphia has been quietly wrapped up in an art world scandal described by one individual involved as the “greatest act of cultural vandalism since WWII”. It was news to me, but thanks to director Don Argott’s documentary The Art of the Steal (Thursday 31st May, 8.30pm), I’ve immersed myself in all the juicy details of an ego driven conflict over control of one of the most valuable private collections of art in the world. It’s a great story.

We’re one week into the 12 day Festival de Cannes, so as they’re half way through I’ve pulled together the thoughts of a variety of critics who are attending the festival to give you an idea of how the headline films are being received. Some films have delighted, others have disappointed, and as ever the critics don’t always agree which description best fits some of the films screening in competition. Although it does look like director Michael Haneke’s Amour is emerging as a front runner for the Palme d’Or.

We’ll hear a lot more about these films over the coming months, but here’s a first taste.

This week I recommend everyone takes a good dose of Heartbreaker (Wednesday 23rd May, 8.30pm); light, charming, and a little bit wacky, this French romantic comedy is perfect mid-week escapism.
