Wednesday evenings through to the end of June on Rialto Channel are all about love. New series ‘Affairs of the Heart’ aims to have us laughing, crying and empathising with the rollercoaster of relationships and love. It’s a diverse mix, from the gorgeously whacky French rom-com Heartbreaker (Wednesday 23rd May, 8.30pm) to the lush costumes of the Tennessee Williams adaptation Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (Wednesday 16th May, 8.30pm).

This week on Rialto Channel Barney’s Version (Saturday 19th May, 8.30pm) should be at the top of your viewing list.  I don’t know anyone who hasn’t enjoyed this witty romp through the highs, lows and three marriages of Barney Panofsky, played brilliantly by Paul Giamatti.

The year sure is rolling by, and as we welcome May to the party it’s time to celebrate a new auteur in Rialto Channel’s Directors’ Showcase (Sundays, 8.30pm). This month, we’re showcasing the work of a true master of contemporary cinema, Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami.

This week we’re featuring the latest drama from Oscar-winning director Alejandro Amenabar, Agora (Saturday 28th April, 8.30pm). A sweeping historical story that takes in the science, politics, philosophy and religion of Alexandria in the 4th century, Agora tells the story of Hypatia, a feminist - Ancient Egyptian style.

A graduate of the Ilam School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, independent Wellington filmmaker Costa Botes has been making television dramas (The Lamb of God), short films (Stalin’s Sickle), feature films (Saving Grace), documentaries (Daytime Tiger, the making of Lord of the Rings), and the occasional hoax (Forgotten Silver) since 1985.
