As I mentioned in my blog at the beginning of the week, I am looking at the bees in my back garden with a new level of admiration and concern after watching the documentary Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?.

I’m looking at the bees in my garden with a whole new level of respect and concern. I’m even letting my herbs go to seed, and it’s all thanks to the documentary Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us? (Thursday 17th January, 8.30pm).

Well, the nominees are pretty much as expected, and yet there are just enough snubs and surprises here to make this awards race exciting.

Happy New Year! I hope you found some sunshine over the holiday period and managed to put your feet up. I’m feeling pretty good about 2013, but then I don’t make any resolutions until February - there’s nothing worse than being reminded you lack self control and discipline right at the start of the year! I’ll leave that feeling for March.

I love Christmas. It’s about more than just one gluttonous, expensive day of eating, giving and receiving. It’s about family, holidays and summer - three of my favourite things. It’s also about forgetting routines, watching the kids go feral, reading the pile of books that’s been stacked up on your bedside table since March, and not feeling guilty about having a beer mid-afternoon.

Here’s the list of the nominees for the Golden Globes 2013. The show will be co-hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey on January 13th. There are a few surprises, namely the multiple nominations for the average Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and a few snubs, Robert Di Niro misses out on a nomination for his critically acclaimed role in Silver Linings Playbook. Over all thought, it’s a pretty straightforward list.

One thing to note, the nominee list does not include a single hobbit.

Israeli film Ajami (Tuesday 18th December, 8.30pm) is at the top of my highlights list this week. Playing as part of our World Cinema programme Around the World in 80 Days, Ajami is a film for anyone curious about life in the Middle East.

The drama Snowtown is based on grisly and grim real life events and is inspired by 2 books Killing for Pleasure, and The Snowtown Murders. In the late 1990’s John Bunting, along with three others, tortured and murdered twelve people and then stored their bodies in barrels in a bank vault in the small rural town of Snowtown.

The film tells the story from the point of view of one of Buntings accomplices, 18-year-old Jamie Vlassakis who was seduced by Bunting into becoming a killer.

For his debut feature film, Australian director Justin Kurzel not only chose a controversial subject, he also worked with mostly non-actors, people discovered from around the Adelaide suburb where Bunting lived. It’s an impressive, intense debut and is held together by a remarkable performance by Daniel Henshall as John Bunting, one of the only three professional actors in the film.

This year, Justin Kurzel and Daniel Henshall visited Auckland as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival to talk about their film and we sat down and had a chat.

We know our neighbours across the ditch can be a little crazy at times, but in the uncompromising and intense drama Snowtown (Saturday 15th December, 8.30pm) they’re at their lunatic worst.
