May is an exceptionally good month on Rialto Channel as we celebrate the Cannes Film Festival by screening an eclectic collection of award winning and critically acclaimed feature films that have screened in competition at Cannes recently.
The most prestigious of the European Film Festivals, Cannes is highly regarded for its competition list each year and is one the glamour events on the festival calendar. It prides itself on presenting the work of auteurs, rather than showcasing potential Oscar winners, and is as enthusiastic about discovering new talent as it is about celebrating the work of established filmmakers.

This year, the 67th Festival de Cannes features work from legendary British director Ken Loach, Canadian wonder-kid Xavier Dolan, Russian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa and the audacious David Cronenberg. So too does Rialto Channel’s Cannes Month.
You’ll be able to catch David Cronenberg’s polarising Cosmopolis, Ken Loach’s delightful The Angel’s Share, Sergei Loznitsa’s intense In The Fog, and Xavier Dolan’s moving Laurence Anyways.

A month’s worth of films are divided up throughout Rialto Channel’s normal programming with Saturday night’s Official Selection boasting an impressive lineup of Rust and Bone, On the Road, Amour, Only God Forgives as well as the already mentioned Cosmopolis.
Each evening I will be introducing these films on screen explaining Francis Ford Coppola’s involvement in bringing Jack Kerouac’s classic novel On the Road to life and how director Jacques Audiard turned Marion Cotillard into a convincing double amputee in Rust and Bone. In Rialto World discover where director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah) found his Reality leading man, a real life Mafia hit man, and what inspired Danish director Thomas Vinterberg’s critically acclaimed film The Hunt staring Mads Mikkelsen.
Other highlights include Ben Zeitlin’s extraordinary Beasts of the Southern Wild and Brandon Cronenberg’s chilling Antiviral, both films from first time directors screening in the Rialto New Wave section.

Francophiles will be delighted with the Wednesday evening lineup of French films, including Bruce and Denis Podalydes seventh film they have presented at Cannes together, the black comedy Granny’s Funeral. Also screening is leading French actress and director Noemie Lvosky’s charming drama Camille Rewinds, which was nominated for 13 Cesar Awards.
If you want whimsy, try Michel Gondry’s The We and the I, if you want black comedy, try Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers, and if you want a moving coming of age story, you can’t go past Belgium director Bouli Lanner’s The Giants.
Basically, there’s something for everyone, so don’t miss this opportunity to see some of the most talked about films from over the last few years.
Rialto Channel’s Cannes Month screens each evening at 8.30pm
