Here are a few highlights for the week:

Starring: Francios Damiens, Audrey Tautou
Directed by: David and Stephane Foenkinos
Screening: Rialto New Wave, Sunday 13th April, 8.30pm
This is a simple and sweet story of love lost and found and has all the charm you’d expect from a French romantic comedy staring Audrey Tautou. Based on the novel by David Foenkinos, who also co-directed with his brother Stephane, it’s a gentle story with a kooky sense of humour, based on the observation that you can’t always control who you fall in love with. Audrey Tautou is a beautiful, petite and smart French woman who loses her equally gorgeous husband in an accident. Much to the amazement of those around her, Markus (Damiens) a gangly, plain, Swedish giant with a lovely sense of humour and a heart of gold catches her eye, and the strike up an unlikely friendship. Its predicable, but there are moments of sadness and sweetness, and lovers of whimsical French rom-coms will enjoy.

Starring: Clive Owen & Andrea Riseborough
Directed by: James Marsh
Screening: Official Selection, Saturday 12th April, 8.30pm
Shadow Dancer is directed by James Marsh, who is a filmmaker well known for his documentaries such as the Oscar winning Man on a Wire and Project Nim. It’s a slow burning and yet suspenseful drama based on a book by Tom Bradbury who was a reporter in Northern Ireland in the early 90s. It’s not based on one true story, rather is based on Bradbury’s general experiences during this time. This is a smart film, it’s tense and sad and it has a very genuine feel, even if it was shot in Dublin rather than Belfast. It tells the story of Colette, a young mother played by rising star Andrea Riseborough, who heads to London to set off an IRA bomb on the underground. She aborts the plan but is captured by a M15, and is given the choice of going to jail for 25 years and never seeing her son again, or head back to Belfast to spy on her hardline IRA brothers. She choses to go home and the consequences are devastating. If you enjoyed Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, then Shadow Dancer is right up your alley.
