Dustin Hoffman has gathered a formidable cast for his directorial debut, a sentimental and charming comedy celebrating life even as we grow old. The film is centered at a retirement home for musicians, where rehearsals are taking place for the annual fundraising concert. Residents are distracted by the arrival of world famous soloist Jean Horton (Smith), who struggles to adjust to her new surroundings. Everything plays out as you expect, but thanks to deft directing by Hoffman, and a cast who look like they’re having a ball, it’s hard not to get caught up in the sweetness and fun of it all.

Starring Ami Ayalon, Avraham Shalom & Avi Dichter

This documentary looks at the ongoing conflict through six surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency. A startlingly honest insight into the work of the Shin Bet, it’s the first time these men have discussed and reflected on their roles within the organisation. The Gatekeepers is a must see for anyone interested in world politics and ethical dilemmas in conflict. While it may be serious stuff, the material is so fascinating and revealing you’ll be gripped in no time.

Starring Stellan Skarsgard, Kristoffer Joner & Benjamin Helstad

King of Devil’s Island is an austere drama and true story about life in the early 20th Century at an infamous correctional facility in Norway. Don’t let that put you off; it’s also a film that’s well acted, tightly directed and beautifully shot. The film begins with a young man called Erling (Helstad) arriving at the Bastøy Boys Home, a reform facility run by Governor Bestyreren (Skarsgard), who believes manual labour and rigid discipline are the only way to turn boys into honourable men. It’s clear from the start that Erling’s not going to take the constant abuse handed out by Bestyreren, and once he’s rallied the other boys Bestyreren has a rebellion to deal with.
