Here are my picks for the week; at the top of the list is documentary Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present - it’s just brilliant.

‘Icon’ and ‘legend’ are words used too frequently to describe successful people, but in the case of performance artist Marina Abramović they’re spot on. Using her body as a vehicle, she has shocked, provoked and moved audiences over the last five decades with her work, and is widely regarded as the Grandmother of performance art. This insightful and moving documentary follows Abramovich as she prepares for a major retrospective of her work at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition and, by extension, documentary, allows Abramović to address the question she’s been asked for decades; why is this art? You might not ‘get’ or like her work, but it’s easy to see from this documentary why she is one of the most compelling artists of our time. Prepare to be moved.

Trishna

Starring Freida Pinto & Riz Ahmed

Directed by Michael Winterbottom

This modern day adaption of Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the D'Ubervilles is the work of English filmmaker Michael Winterbottom. Slumdog Millionaire actress Freid Pinto takes the role of Trishna, a gorgeous but poor young woman convinced by a wealthy young English Indian to leave her sheltered life in Rajasthan to work for him. They fall in love and move to Bombay where they begin a new life together, but their different backgrounds make their relationship difficult and Trishna finds herself trapped by her controlling lover and the need to support her family. The locations and cinematography are divine; this is an exotic and beautiful update of a classic.

Caught Inside

Starring Phillip Phelps, Sam Lyndon and Simon Lyndon

Directed by Adam Blaiklock

Premieres Friday 15th November, 8.30pm

WATCH AND WIN - look out for the key word and be in to win a luxury trip for two to Australia. Find out more here.

The Friday night Australian film season continues this week with thriller Caught Inside. It’s the debut feature film from director/screenwriter Adam Blaiklock about a ‘surfari’ on a charter boat in Indonesia that goes horrible wrong. What should have been a boy’s surfing trip is turned on its head when one of the lads brings his girlfriend and her single friend Sam along. The attractive Sam sets off a sexual rivalry between two of the guys and it’s not long before one is pushed over the edge, revealing some rather anti-social traits. It’s not a perfect debut, but the performances are solid and the scenery impressive, it might just convince you to take up surfing.
