Calling all fans of Scandinavian thrillers and Coen Brothers’ films. Here’s a highly entertaining and gruesome thriller infused with a dark sense of humour. Based on a Jo Nesbo novel (Norway’s answer to Stieg Larsson) this thriller tells the story of employment headhunter Roger Brown (Hennie), who supplements his income by stealing art. It’s the perfect way to pay for a luxurious lifestyle that includes a remarkable home and a beautiful wife he can’t help but spoil. His risks it all when he decides to steal from wealthy former mercenary Clas Greve (Coster-Waldau), who it turns out has an agenda of his own involving Roger. With plenty of twists and turns, Headhunters is never dull, and the more outrageous and gory this thriller gets the more fun it is. It’s also worth watching just for the architecture.

Starring: Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster & Sigourney Weaver

It doesn’t matter that Woody Harrelson has starred in films by Oliver Stone, the Coen Brothers, Milos Forman, Michael Winterbottom, Barry Levinson, Richard Linklater and Niki Caro, to me he’s always been Woody Boyd from Cheers. It’s unfair, and his role as a dodgy cop in Rampart is another reason why I’ve got to leave Woody behind - it’s a blindingly good performance. Harrelson plays Dave Brown, a Rampart Precinct cop, who does the people’s dirty work by dishing out his own kind of justice. Brown’s thuggery doesn’t go down well with his officials but he honestly believes that he’s doing good, and this is what makes him an interesting character. Directed by Oren Moverman (The Messenger) Rampart is gritty and unpredictable, and while ‘Date Rape’ Dave is one of least likeable characters you’ll meet on screen he’s also one of the most complex and compelling. Rampart is not for the easily offended.

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to live next to neighbours from hell then you’ll relate to the situation Max and Therese find themselves in. The proud new owners of a character house in a leafy suburban street, they’re thrilled to meet the young family on one side of them, and rather taken aback to learn the truth about the neighbours on the other side. They’re loud, violent and drug addled; the cops suggest Max and Therese give earplugs a go, but it’s not long before they crack and take the law into their own hands, with rather amusing results. The King is Dead! is a mishmash of genres and infused with black humour - the Aussie’s certainly aren’t afraid of exploring the more perverse nature of life in the suburbs.
