As one stylish series comes to an end this week, Rebound, another beauty kicks off, series 2 of Aussie comedy Rake. As I’ve written before about Rake, this brilliantly written satire about witty, self-destructive and politically incorrect barrister Cleaver Greene (Richard Roxburgh) is hilarious, a little bit naughty and superbly acted. If you missed series one you can catch up on all of Cleaver Greene’s antics by watching Rake: The Box Set on Sunday 6th October from 8.20am.

My highlights for the week.

Rebound – Season Final

Starring Anne Consigny, Clotilde Hesme, Céline Sallette
Directed by Fabrice Gobert
Premiering Wednesday 2nd October, 8.30pm

This French zombie horror series has been an absolute ripper - stylish, atmospheric, mysterious and haunting - and it comes to an end on Wednesday night. An exercise in restraint, Rebound is a measured and beautifully shot series in which the victims of a fatal bus accident return to their mountainous village, turning the lives of the living upside down. Director Fabrice Gobert has taken a cinematic approach, and knows just when to throw in another twist or revelation to keep you coming back for more.

Does this finale wrap up all the mysteries? Not quite - that’s what Series 2 is for. If you’ve missed this series you’ve got another chance to see them on November 14th - we will be screening Rebound: The Box Set, with all of the episodes from series 1 running back to back.

Wish You Were Here

Starring: Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, Felicity Price and Antony Starr
Directed by: Kieran Darcy-Smith
Premiering: Saturday 5th October, 8.30pm

Aussie actor Joel Edgerton drives this suspenseful psychological thriller about a husband and father trying to get his life back together after a holiday in Cambodia. A family holiday of sorts, the trip with his wife and her sister ends in the mysterious disappearance of his sister-in-law’s new boyfriend, played by Antony Starr.

Edgerton is an actor on the move. After acclaimed turns in The Square and Animal Kingdom he’s been working non-stop in Hollywood on films such as Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty and The Great Gatsby. He’s even managing to get his own screenplay, Felony, produced and has just wrapped Ridley Scott’s epic Exodus. Enjoy his performance in this smaller, more intimate film before he turns A-list.

Paul Williams: Still Alive

Directed by: Stephen Kessler
Premiering: Thursday 3rd October, 8.30pm

Paul Williams may not have looked like a superstar, but in the 70s he ruled the airwaves with hits such as Barbra Streisand's Evergreen and the Carpenter's We've Only Just Begun, not to mention Kermit the Frog's biggest hit, The Rainbow Connection. He won Grammys and Academy Awards and thanks to his dry, sharp wit was a favourite on the talkshow circuit.

One day, he went from being everywhere to nowhere, and filmmaker and fan Stephen Kessler presumed he had died. When he discovered recently Paul was alive and well he convinced Paul to let him make a documentary. Discovering whatever happened to Paul Williams is fascinating, but the real fun is watching him refuse to let Stephen Kessler make a normal, bland documentary. Keep an eye on my blog later in the week when I talk to Stephen about making a film about a man who doesn’t want to be filmed!
