During May, Rialto Channel is all about the Festival de Cannes. Throughout the month, I’ll be on screen introducing you to an eclectic collection of award-winning and critically-acclaimed feature films that have screened in competition at Cannes recently.

The season is called Cannes: A Celebration of Film, and it gives a real sense of what’s happening around the world in independent cinema, from South Africa to Romania, Turkey and Australia. You’ll see the latest work from an assortment of acclaimed directors such as Gus Van Sant, Nanni Moretti and Radu Mihaileanu, and meet some up-and-coming auteurs such as Catalin Mitulescu, Julia Leigh and Oliver Hermanus.

The series features the joint Grand Prix winners from Cannes in 2011, The Kid with A Bike by the Belgium Dardenne Brothers and Once Upon A Time in Anatolia by Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

You’ll see why I believe Tilda Swinton was robbed of an Oscar nomination for her performance in We Need To Talk About Kevin! Also playing is crime thriller Polisse, directed by French filmmaker Maiwenn, which won the Jury’s Prize when it screened in competition at the Festival.d Prix winners from Cannes in 2011, The Kid with A Bike by the Belgium Dardenne Brothers and Once Upon A Time in Anatolia by Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

And in the spirit of a real film groupie, Rialto Channel also brings you Cannes Moments, a documentary series that looks back at the festival’s greatest moments, movies and controversies.

Fittingly, the featured director in Rialto Channel’s Directors Series this month is Cannes regular Gus Van Sant. Gus Van Sant was first nominated for the Palme d’Or in 1995 for To Die For, and awarded the top prize in 2003 for Elephant. He was also the recipient of the festival’s 60th anniversary award for Paranoid Park in 2007. Throughout May you’ll be able to enjoy both To Die For and Elephant, along with My Own Private Idaho, Gerry and his latest feature film Restless.

So, why is Rialto Channel celebrating the Festival de Cannes?

Well, for me, the Festival de Cannes is the “Grand Dame” of festivals, it’s just a little more special than the rest. It features a respected and discerning programme of films, premieres the work of the world’s top directors year after year, and has grown over time into a market for the film industry to do serious business as well as party.

What gives Cannes its edge though, is a combination of glamour, prestige, long standing traditions and location - all of which attract the world’s biggest stars, and the associated media throng that remind us Cannes is the place to be. There is no doubt the Riviera will be rocking from May 15th until May 26th!
