In 18th century Yorkshire, a large Frenchman 'Black Jack' kidnaps young honest Tolly and they encounter mishaps on their adventures. Their journey takes them through travelling fairs, murder, and the rescue of a young girl from a private insane asylum. Based on Leon Garfield's popular novel.
