Since 1988, the city of Philadelphia has been quietly wrapped up in an art world scandal described by one individual involved as the “greatest act of cultural vandalism since WWII”. It was news to me, but thanks to director Don Argott’s documentary The Art of the Steal (Thursday 31st May, 8.30pm), I’ve immersed myself in all the juicy details of an ego driven conflict over control of one of the most valuable private collections of art in the world. We’re one week into the 12 day Festival de Cannes, so as they’re half way through I’ve pulled together the thoughts of a variety of critics who are attending the festival to give you an idea of how the headline films are being received. Some films have delighted, others have disappointed, and as ever the critics don’t always agree which description best fits some of the films screening in competition. Although it does look like director Michael Haneke’s Amour is emerging as a front runner for the Palme d’Or.

Wednesday evenings through to the end of June on Rialto Channel are all about love. New series ‘Affairs of the Heart’ aims to have us laughing, crying and empathising with the rollercoaster of relationships and love. It’s a diverse mix, from the gorgeously whacky French rom-com Heartbreaker (Wednesday 23rd May, 8.30pm) to the lush costumes of the Tennessee Williams adaptation Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (Wednesday 16th May, 8.30pm).

This week on Rialto Channel Barney’s Version (Saturday 19th May, 8.30pm) should be at the top of your viewing list.  I don’t know anyone who hasn’t enjoyed this witty romp through the highs, lows and three marriages of Barney Panofsky, played brilliantly by Paul Giamatti.

This week’s highlights kicks off with a dose of economics; Freakanomics (Thursday 10th May, 8.30pm) is a surprising documentary based on the book of the same name, written by economist Steven D. Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner.
