Anna is a 12-year-old girl, raised as a foster child by a mother who requires government assistance. Ashamed and angry, Anna retreats into art and thought, while her asthma rises up at inopportune times. Anna is sent into the country to live with kindly relatives Setsu and Kiyomasa for the summer and retreats to the comfort of solitude, discovering a seemingly abandoned marsh house nearby.
